The Garden – May 25th

I never got around to snapping pictures of the just-planted garden beds, but I did take some last night! This is what the garden is looking like two weeks after planting.

The strawberry patch has pretty much doubled in size since I planted it last fall (with runners from my Mom’s plants) and we’re getting berries!

The cucumbers and carrots are sprouting in this box. We got a bad rain storm right after I planted everything (2” in one day!) so there are a few spots where the carrot seeds washed into groups. I’m going to have to thin them out and probably re-seed in a few areas.

The top row here is string beans. I have to add in a pole and string for them to climb soon. Below that is spinach and lettuce, mostly just starting to poke through. Bottom right is a zucchini plant. I seeded a few and this is the only one that came up! I’m going to have to baby it.

This bed is pretty much everything I planted from seedlings – tomatoes, sweet peppers, hot peppers, eggplants and tomatillos. So far we’ve been able to keep the deer and bunnies away.

Herbs are in pots on the deck this year. Mark’s Mom put together this one, and it’s doing really well.

This one on the other hand, not so much. This was mostly re-plants of things that lasted the winter in the garden. I’m going to rip out and redo soon.

And, my blueberry bush!

Which looks a little sad until you get up close and see it’s covered in tiny blueberries! I’m pretty excited for these.

I think the hardest part of gardening is the delayed gratification bit – which is why I’m loving the strawberries right now. I picked out the first bunch last night and there’s more to come! Don’t they look awesome?

I’m hoping to post updated pictures weekly… we’ll see if that works out.

Andrea’s Bridal Shower

My cousin, Andrea, is getting married down the shore in just about a month. We got a bit of a preview to the festivities today at her shower. It was at a cute little place across the street from the beach.

We have such a great family so it’s always fun when we get together. I’m so looking forward to the wedding and partying with all of them! We rounded up all the cousins for a picture – so many awesome ladies.

And of course, things were capped off with cake. There were also funfetti cake pops – so good!

Congrats again, Andrea – we can’t wait to celebrate the big day with you!

2012 Garden Plan

2012 garden plan

This is what our garden looks like this year. A lot of the same things as last year, but I moved them around a bit based on how the sun comes across the yard and what did well last year.

All of the plants and seeds went in on Saturday. I’ll post pictures when it finally stops raining!

3 Weeks

Mark’s CFA exam is in three weeks. He’s been in study mode for months, but after taking a three-day review class this weekend, it feels like things are finally getting close.

Every night, it’s the same routine. Dinner, and then Mark plops on the bed to study, along with one of the kitties.

I’m excited for the test to be here. It means we finally get our evenings back. I’m sure the kitties won’t be as thrilled, though – they’re enjoying the extra cuddles too much.

Mother’s Day

Mark spent his entire weekend in class for his upcoming CFA exam, so I invited his Mom and my Mom down for some early Mother’s Day celebrating yesterday. We planned to hit up the local master gardener plant sale and then have brunch at the house. A simple, low-key way to spend the morning.

It ended up being not so relaxed. While I planted the garden, the Moms mowed and trimmed the lawn, moved some bushes and flowers, and trimmed up some other shrubs. It was a marathon yard work day.

I said several times that I felt bad they came down to do my yard work on Mother’s Day weekend. Every time, they insisted they didn’t mind at all. I’m so lucky to have Moms like that. I hope they know how appreciated they are!
