A Valentine’s Day Surprise

We had a very nice Valentine’s day. Mark brought home roses for me Monday night and we exchanged cards and candy. I drove up to Newark after work to meet him for dinner and the Seton Hall basketball game.

It’s not a traditional Valentine’s Day date, but we love it.

We got home around 10 pm and there were packaged on the porch. I assumed they were the Target shipment I was waiting for, but there was another one too – the slipcovers we ordered for the couches!

To understand why that was so exciting, you have to know that I’ve never really loved our couches. Mark purchased our living room set second-hand from his Uncle’s neighbor a few weeks before we moved into our apartment. It’s completely functional and has served us well – even if it isn’t really our style.

The couches really started to show some wear and tear around the time we moved into the house. New ones weren’t in the budget so we started looking at slipcovers. I couldn’t find any I really liked and they were all fairly expensive so we decided to suck it up until we had the money for a new living room set.

Fast forward a year and half and the couches are really looking bad – holes galore. It was time to do something. I found some clearance slip covers online in a decent color and ordered them.

As soon as the box with said slip covers was open, Mark started putting it on the couch with an, “I’m going to beat you!” Which turned into a race to see who could get their slip cover on and looking decent first. At 10 pm at night. On Valentine’s Day. When we had both been out of the house since 6:45 am. Yes, we’re that couple. (For the record, I totally won.)

The slipcovers aren’t my favorite ever, but they’re a definite improvement and will delay us having to buy new couches for a bit longer. I’m also going to use them as a springboard to do a cheap refresh of the living room. Hopefully before and after pictures will come soon!
